MAJESTIC, SEASIDE BAJA GOLF COURSES

Few, if any, golf courses worldwide possess landscape and scenery equal to Baja California. Strolling down the fairway of a Baja golf course you'll be treated to the sound of crashing waves with breathtaking ocean views to the west and strolling hills and mountains to the east.

Several courses are inviting to the "scratch" golfer while others provide distances and holes that will challenge those with low handicaps.

Porto Hussong, with its central location in Ensenada, is within a short drive to all of northern Baja's most acclaimed courses.

ENSENADA GOLF COURSES

Bajamar Golf Course
The 18 original holes at Bajamar, now the Lagos and Vista nines, were designed by Percy Clifford in 1976. In the early 1990s the course underwent a redesign, mostly to the tees and greens, and a new irrigation system was installed. The Oceano nine, designed by Robert Von Hagge, opened in June 1996.

Real del Mar Golf Course
Opened in 1992, this course was carved out of three canyons along the Pacific. Twelve of the holes have ocean views to the Coronado Islands. Bermuda greens, rarely seen in the San Diego area, are used on the short layout, which measures less than 6,000 yards from the white tees. The narrow front nine circles a mountain, with water on the short par-4 second, the par-3 third and to the right of the green on the fifth, a par-4 that doglegs left. The sixth through ninth holes head down the mountain but normally play into stiff ocean breezes. The back nine is a bit longer as it heads out through a canyon, then makes a 180-degree turn back toward the clubhouse.

Tijuana Country Club
This course rolls up and down hills through wide, tree-lined fairways. Prevailing westerly breezes hold up shots hit into them and Bermuda and Bent grasses brings balls to rest quickly once they hit the ground. There is almost no water, but more than 100 strategically placed sand traps. The nines were reversed a few years back when a new pro shop was added near what is now the 18th green. Irrigation work has ensured that the course stays green year round. The front nine is approximately 200 yards shorter than the back, with reachable par-5s (at least from the whites) at the first and ninth holes. The back side ends strongly with a 554-yard, par-5 17th followed by a par-3 18th of 200-plus yards.
