Meridian Development Group, LLC (MDG) has announced the start of a landmark project that will bring a world-class, 16-acre oceanfront resort, rich with amenities and just an hour’s drive from the international border at Tijuana.
Called “Porto Hussong” and located on the edge of Todos Santos Bay in the northern part of the Baja California port city of Ensenada, Porto Hussong will feature oceanfront condominiums, a five-star boutique hotel, private villas, luxury fractional residence club, upscale boutiques, cafes and restaurants and a state-of-the-art marina to accommodate yachts up to 200’ in length.
Porto Hussong will be a resort and residential enclave unique to the region, designed for vacation getaways or retirement living. Spanish architecture, high ceilings, ocean vistas, airy patios, lush gardens, waterfalls, quiet alcoves, winding paths and an oceanfront promenade combine with outdoor cafes, shops, pools, spas, tennis courts and other recreational opportunities for relaxation or active reinvigoration.
“Porto Hussong will be a luxury destination that serves as a stepping
stone to the Baja experience,” says MDG CEO Chris Merson.
Ensenada is a popular port-of-call for major cruise lines and pleasure boats, and some 40,000 Americans already live there. Its popularity springs from is its reputation for fishing, seafood and winemaking industries as well as its restaurants, shopping, ample services and a wide variety of accommodations. The area also offers fascinating attractions including historical, cultural and natural points of interest, museums, galleries and missions.
Residential living and vacation opportunities for the first phase will include 200 oceanfront condominium residences, a 46-suite boutique hotel, six villas or membership in The Meridian Club’s residence club, offering fractional ownership of luxury vacation homes with global exchange privileges. All condominiums will feature modern, high-end finishes, fixtures and appliances. An on-site interior decorator is available to help buyers personalize their getaway to suit their individual style and tastes.
An 8,800 square foot retail area will include art galleries, a café, bakery and market, and specialty boutique shops featuring clothing, jewelry, florist, books, pottery and leather goods.
Amenities will include a fitness center, pool, spa facilities, tennis courts, bicycle pathways and access to sport fishing, kayaking and other ocean-related activities.
Porto Hussong will be the newest and most elaborate resort on the northern Baja California coastline, a region that has been coming into its own in recent years. Real estate agents report that many U.S. residents are currently buying high-rise oceanfront condominiums and large, single-level homes. Merson notes that enthusiasm and anticipation for Porto Hussong is already high.
“We already have 90 buyers lined up just based on renderings,” he says.
Porto Hussong is already fully funded by outside sources and equity from other MDG properties. That means the project won’t be left unfinished, a risk that occurs if a developer relies on unit sales and down payments for construction funding.
The Marina
Newport Beach’s Corrough Consulting Group will design Porto Hussong’s marina and yacht club. Corrough’s portfolio includes award-winning projects around the globe ranging from small craft harbors to mega-yacht marinas. When complete, the Porto Hussong Marina will accommodate a total of 250 yachts ranging in size from 40 to over 200 feet. The complex will offer a full range of quality facilities and services not currently available in the Ensenada area. Services will include charter fishing and diving, charter sailboats, boat rental, ferries, water taxis, fuel, security and yacht services including sales, brokerage, delivery and management services. Accessible to the city and port of Ensenada, Porto Hussong’s marina will provide ocean enthusiasts an amenity-rich and convenient launching point for offshore cruising and deep-sea fishing off the waters of the Todos Santos Islands and down the west coast of the Baja Peninsula…known for some of the best sport fishing in the world.
The Architect
The resort was designed by architect Arthur Valdes, who has contributed to the design of many of the country’s top hotel brands including Ritz-Carlton and Four Seasons. His work also includes the Las Hadas Resort & Hotel in Manzanillo, the Palmilla Resort hotel and resort, Punto Chileno and La Esperanza in Cabo San Lucas and is currently developing new exterior and interior concepts for the MGM Grand Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.
The Management Company
ResortCom International, the leading provider of financial and resort and club management services to the vacation ownership and resort industry, will manage The Meridian Club membership as well as additional resort services, operations and accommodations for Porto Hussong.
The Developers
Porto Hussong is the result of a shared vision and partnership of MDG and the famed Hussong family of Ensenada. John Hussong came to Mexico in 1889 and opened the world-famous “Hussong’s Cantina” in 1892. His five children have been involved in various businesses throughout Mexico and the United States. One, Walter Hussong Sr., was an entrepreneur whose spirit and marketing success is credited with helping spur Ensenada’s industrial and tourism growth. One of his endeavors, the Hotel Quintas Papagayo, recently occupied the land that will become Porto Hussong.
“The Hussongs have been approached by many developers over the years,” notes Merson. “They chose to partner with us due to our track record in Mexico, and they liked the project’s concept that will carry the family name for many years to come.”
MDG is an international consortium comprised of real estate development, construction, financial and marketing experts who have developed numerous successful projects throughout Mexico for more than 38 years. Headquartered in Reno Nevada, MDG has offices in Baja California and Mexico City.
